This painting is an attempt to convey the severe beauty of deep winter in Missouri. The setting sun, with its raking light, reveals the texture of bark and thorns on this honey locust tree at Burr Oak Woods in Jackson County, Missouri. The subject brings to my mind the biblical account of the fall of man into sin, and the resulting curse and death. Yet as there is beauty in the barren winter woods, so there are mercies mixed in with God's judgments. "He makes everything beautiful in its time." When our greenery fades and falls with age, we come to realize what lasts and what doesn't, and what is most important: relationships with people and our Creator.
